Why I Love It

A room becomes more meaningful when the people and memories we love are part of it. That is why I will almost always choose a personal photograph over one more decorative object.

If I Were Styling It in Your Home

I would layer this rather than isolate it. Place it slightly in front of a taller object, beside a lamp, or on a short stack of books. Mix personal photographs among decorative pieces—that is what makes a shelf feel like your home instead of a showroom.

A Little Designer Advice

Do not worry about having perfectly coordinated frames. A thoughtful mix of finishes can make family photographs feel collected over time, especially when another material repeats elsewhere in the room.

If You're Giving It

If it is appropriate, I would not give this empty. Add a favorite photograph before wrapping it so the recipient opens a memory rather than simply a frame.
