I would try this on a bookshelf, console, coffee table, mantel, or side table and pair it with pieces of different heights and materials. Resist centering every object or filling every gap. One interesting piece with a little room around it often has more impact than several smaller things crowded together.
A Little Designer Advice
If you are trying to fix a surface that feels unfinished, add one piece and live with it before adding another. Often the problem is balance or scale—not that you need more décor.
